Sarva Pitru Tarpan

September 21st , Sunday

Sarva Pitru Tarpan is a significant Hindu ritual performed on Sarva Pitru Amavasya, the last and most important day of the 16-day period known as Pitru Paksha. This fortnight is dedicated to honoring and remembering one's ancestors.

Purpose and Significance

Honoring Ancestors: The core purpose is to pay homage, express gratitude, and seek the blessings of one's forefathers. It is believed that during Pitru Paksha, the souls of ancestors visit the earth to receive offerings from their descendants.

Liberation and Peace: Performing the rituals is believed to bring peace and liberation to the souls of the deceased, helping them on their onward journey. It is also thought to help them attain Moksha (salvation).

Clearing Pitru Dosha: In Hindu astrology, a "Pitru Dosha" is a karmic imbalance caused by the negative deeds of ancestors. Performing these rituals is considered a powerful way to mitigate this dosha, which can otherwise lead to obstacles in one's life related to health, wealth, marriage, and family.

Fulfilling "Pitru Rin": The rituals are a way to repay the "debt" or "Pitru Rin" owed to ancestors for their contributions to the family's well-being.
