“He is mine — whether He is my friend, my beloved, or my child. That is the Bhav (emotion) of Raas.”
Swami Mukundananda

🌟 Introduction: Raas Leela Is Not a Story — It Is Divine Revelation

As the sacred festival of Janmashtami 2025 approaches, millions prepare to honor the divine appearance of Shree Krishna — the Supreme Lord who, although unborn, manifests on Earth out of compassion to uplift souls.

Among the infinite leelas performed by Krishna, there is one that stands unparalleled in its spiritual depth, symbolism, and revelation of divine love: the Raas Leela — the divine dance with the Gopis, where Krishna becomes the soul of every soul.

According to Swami Mukundananda Ji, Raas Leela is not a romantic story — it is a sophisticated spiritual truth. It is the culmination of Bhakti Yoga, where the devotee transcends all bodily identifications, worldly duties, and ego — and becomes one with God in divine love.

🌕 The Most Auspicious Night: Sharad Purnima

"A stupendous picture of Lord Krishna who is looking divinely beautiful under the moonlight."

Shree Krishna chose the most spiritually charged night of the year to bestow Maha Raas upon the Gopis — the Sharad Purnima, which falls in late September or early October.

Swami Ji describes this night:

  • The rainy season had just ended
  • The weather was perfectly balanced — neither hot nor cold
  • The full moon was shining, and nature was at peace
  • The banks of the Yamuna glowed under the divine atmosphere

Beneath the shade of His favorite Kadamba tree, Krishna appeared in His three-fold bending form, holding His flute.

“He placed the flute to His lips and began to play — not just a melody, but the very essence of His divine love.”
— Swami Mukundananda

🎵 The Divine Flute Call

/0:10

"Krishna is blessing the grooves of Vrindavan by playing the Pancham Swar through this divine flute."

The Pancham Swar (fifth note) of Krishna’s flute resonated across Vrindavan — yet not everyone heard it.

Swami Ji explains:

“Krishna's flute is not just a musical instrument. It is an emotional expression. When He played it that night, He infused it with divine longing and love.”

But this flute sound was not audible to all. It was only heard by those who were Adhikāri — spiritually qualified.

“Others kept sleeping. But the Gopis — who had practiced Bhakti across countless lifetimes — immediately recognized the call.”

👣 The Gopis Leave Everything Behind

"Radha, the chief Gopi, is incessantly searching for Krishna, following his flute sound."

The moment the Gopis heard the flute, they lost external consciousness. Their minds automatically reached Krishna. Some began to dress properly, some wore clothes inside out, and some simply ran with no care for social appearances.

They left:

  • Their homes
  • Their husbands
  • Their children
  • Their social status
  • Their fear of criticism
“They were helpless. He was the treasure of their life, and He was calling.”
— Swami Mukundananda

This was not madness. It was Samadhi.

🧘 The Gopis Enter Samadhi – Spiritual Trance

Swami Ji reveals that the Gopis attained different states of Samadhi (trance):

  • Some were in Jagrit Samadhi (awakened trance) — consciously aware of Krishna
  • Some in Swapna Samadhi (dream-like state) — semi-aware
  • Others in Sushupti Samadhi — complete spiritual absorption

In these states:

  • One Gopi carefully applied lipstick before leaving
  • Another forgot what she was doing, dressing haphazardly
  • A third simply ran, unconscious of appearance or direction

This level of detachment from the body and absorption in Krishna is not humanly possible without millions of lifetimes of purification.

🌲 Into the Forest They Ran

They ran into the night forest — barefoot, alone, unafraid. The only thing in their heart was Krishna.

“This is the Raas Pad. The place where Krishna manifested the highest bliss.”

They did not ask what would happen. They didn’t consider who might see them.

“This is not the love of the world. This is the love of the soul for the Divine.”

📖 Maharās: Krishna’s Promise Fulfilled

"Krishna showering his divine bliss on all the Gopi out of his causeless grace."

At the time of Chir Haran, Krishna had promised the Gopis:

“I will give you the Maharās — the bliss that transcends even liberation.”

That night, He fulfilled it. But not before a test.

And this is where we begin to see the true essence of the Raas Leela.

🧭 Krishna Tests the Gopis: “Why Have You Come?”

As the Gopis gathered in the forest, hearts pounding with anticipation, Krishna greeted them with a smile and a curious question:

“Swāgatam... Welcome. But why have you come?”

He looked at the beautiful moonlit night, the blossoming flowers, the peaceful riverbank, and said:

“Surely, you’ve come to enjoy this lovely scene. Now, you must return home. It’s not safe here — wild animals roam the forest. Go back to your homes, to your families.”

The Gopis stood still.

Why was Krishna saying this? He had played the flute. He had called them. Now He was asking them to leave?

Swami Mukundananda Ji explains:

“Krishna was not rejecting them. He was testing their Bhakti. The teacher always tests to see if the student has truly learned.”

🧠 Krishna Gives a Lecture on Dharma

Krishna reminded them of their worldly duties — of husbands, children, families, and responsibilities.

“You must serve your father-in-law and mother-in-law. Take care of your home. What are you doing in this forest at night?”

This wasn’t the Krishna they knew. The Supreme Soul who resided in their hearts was now giving them a discourse on social Dharma?

It was a test of renunciation, of surrender, and most importantly — of understanding.

💬 The Gopis Answer with Divine Wisdom

The Gopis — simple village girls with no formal education — answered in the language of Vedanta. Swami Ji brings out the brilliance of their reply:

“Are you not the Akhil Atma — the soul of all souls?”
“Then by worshipping You, we are worshipping all. Just like watering the root of a tree nourishes all its branches, by surrendering to You, we fulfill all our duties.”

They weren’t speaking emotionally. They were responding with pure scriptural understanding and deep internal experience.

“We are no longer in lower Dharma. We have reached Parā Dharma — the highest duty: to love and serve God.”

Krishna accepted their reasoning.

He smiled. They had passed the test.

“Tests are always good. They promote you to the next level.”
— Swami Mukundananda

🌀 Now Begins the Raas — The Supreme Dance

And then, the Raas began.

Krishna manifested multiple forms, so that He could dance with each Gopi individually. Each believed she was alone with Him. Yet He remained One — undivided, supreme, eternal.

Swami Ji explains:

“It was like a child playing with his own shadows on the beach. Krishna Chandra played with His fragments — the Gopis.”

This was not just a dance. It was an expression of divine union. The culmination of lifetimes of Bhakti was now manifesting in the form of Raas — the highest spiritual experience.

At the center of the circle stood Radha Krishna, dancing in divine harmony — the embodiment of Prem Bhakti.

👑 Radha: The Personification of Divine Bhakti

"Radha is not just another Gopi, she is the manifestation of Krishna himself. There is no difference between Radha and Krishna, they are one."

Radha was not just another Gopi.

Swami Mukundananda Ji shares:

“Radha’s Bhakti was of such high purity, Krishna was helpless before it. Her love was not tinged with desire or possession — it was selfless, perfect devotion.”

Through Yoga Maya, Krishna created a mind for Himself — because as Atmarām, He is beyond all needs. But in order to accept the love and service of devotees, He chooses to act like a receiver.

That is the Raas: God hiding His divinity to become accessible to those who love Him purely.

🧘‍♂️ The Three Kinds of Gopis Who Participated

Swami Ji clarifies that the Gopis were not just women of Vrindavan — they were spiritual masters in various forms:

  1. Sādhana Siddha Gopis – Those who had attained perfection through sādhanā over lifetimes
  2. Nitya Siddha Gopis – Eternal associates of Krishna from Golok who descended for the Leela
  3. Rishi Rupa Gopis – Sages from the Ram Avatar who had prayed to experience divine love and now incarnated as Gopis

Even Lord Shiva, hearing the divine flute, could not resist. He bathed in Mānsarovar, took the form of a Gopi — Shivani Gopi — and joined the Raas.

That is why in Vrindavan, the Shivling is worshipped as Gopeshwar Mahadev, and dressed in female attire.

📜 A Revelation, Not a Romance

Many who read about Raas Leela misunderstand it as a romantic affair.

Swami Ji warns:

“If you have doubts about these Leelas, the Bhagavatam is not for you. It is not for the skeptical or impure.”

He explains:

  • Krishna who performed Raas also spoke the Bhagavad Gita
  • The Gita teaches: “You are not the body — you are the soul”
  • Once you transcend body consciousness, you can enter the world of divine love
“Where the Gita ends, the Bhagavatam begins.”

The Raas Leela is not meant for logic, it is meant for divine experience. It is the final destination of a soul that has transcended ego, attachments, and duality.

🌪️ When Ego Creeps In — Krishna Disappears

As the Maha Raas reached its peak, the Gopis felt blessed beyond comprehension.

Each believed:

“Krishna is dancing with me.”
“I must be special.”
“I am so beautiful. I am so favored.”

Swami Mukundananda Ji explains that this subtle thought — "I" — was the enemy of Bhakti.

“The moment the ego appears, God disappears.”

Krishna saw this pride rising and disappeared — instantly. Gone from the Raas. Gone from their sight.

The bliss vanished.

“Grace disappears when ‘I’ comes. In the street of divine love, only one can remain — either ‘I’ or God.”

🌑 The Pain of Separation — Viraha Bhakti

"One of the Gopi is incessantly longing for Krishna as he disappears after sensing Ego in them."

The Gopis were devastated. Their Beloved was gone.

What followed was not worldly despair, but Viraha Bhakti — the pain of separation that deepens divine love.

They searched the forests. They cried. They sang to the trees, to the Yamuna, to the stars — “Have you seen Shyamsundar?”

Their longing intensified. Every moment without Krishna felt like lifetimes.

Swami Ji reveals:

“This pain is not suffering — it is the highest form of devotion. It purifies the soul completely.”

🙏 Krishna Accepts Their Surrender

Moved by their unconditional love, Krishna finally returned — this time, holding the hand of Radha.

“All were dancing before — now only One dances with Him.”

Why Radha?

Because her love was completely free of ego.

She never once thought:

  • “He is mine”
  • “Why did He leave me?”
  • “I deserve this”

Her devotion was pure, egoless, and unconditional.

🧠 Why Did Krishna Disappear?

Swami Mukundananda Ji explains the spiritual psychology behind it:

  • God does not need anything
  • But He allows Himself to become needy through Yogmaya
  • He accepts service, not because He lacks — but to allow souls to love Him
“God, who is Atmarām (fully content), creates needs only to let devotees serve Him.”

But the moment a soul starts thinking:

“I am doing something special. I am superior.”
That ego interrupts the flow of Bhakti.

So Krishna disappears to restore purity.

🌟 Final Symbolism of the Raas Leela

Swami Ji summarizes the meaning behind this divine Leela:

  • Krishna's flute: The call of God to the soul
  • The forest: The unknown path of Bhakti
  • The Gopis: The souls who surrender all for God
  • Krishna’s disappearance: The removal of ego
  • Radha: The perfected Bhakta — ego-less, selfless love
  • Raas Leela: The spiritual dance of the soul with the Divine

🪔 Raas Leela on Janmashtami: How to Understand It Today

"Radha and Krishna standing together holding each other's hands, depicting the utmost divinity of their form."

So how can we — as devotees — connect with this timeless Leela during Janmashtami 2025?

Swami Mukundananda Ji recommends:

🧘 1. Go Beyond Rituals

  • Don’t just fast or decorate idols — go inward
  • Reflect on whether your Bhakti is ego-free and unconditional

📖 2. Read Gita First, Then the Bhagavatam

  • The Gita teaches: “You are the soul”
  • Once you know that, you’re ready for Raas — the divine love of the soul for God

🕉️ 3. Cultivate Viraha Bhakti

  • Don’t fear separation — long for God like the Gopis
  • That longing purifies and elevates

🌸 4. Ask Yourself: Who Is at the Center?

  • Is it “I”? Or is it “Krishna”?
  • If you’re still the doer, the Raas hasn’t begun

💬 Quotes by Swami Mukundananda Ji from This Teaching

“He hides all His powers and says: ‘I want, I need’ — just to allow devotees to love and serve.”
“Tests are necessary. They take you to the next spiritual level.”
“Krishna didn’t disappear to punish — but to help you purify your love.”
“Bhagavatam is not for the doubter. It is a scripture for those who wish to become one with God.”
“Where Gita ends, Bhagavatam begins. Where knowledge ends, divine love begins.”
